Hey to all you out there.... I'm looking for any firsthand experiences or recommendations on a set of tires for my '02 SS. My first priority is to keep the price as low as possible and I don't care about tread wear at all. Don't care if they only last 10K miles. Other important criteria.... good traction, handling and low noise.... don't care about performance in snow, ice and don't even have to be all that good in rain. So far I've been looking at (1) Avon Tech 500, (2) Cooper Zeon 2XS and (3) General Eclaim UHP.... welcome any and all inputs........

Kumho is a good cheap tire. I have (2) new Falken tires 275/40/17s I will sell ya. Let me know if you may want them.

Have the Falken's ever been mounted? i.e. any miles on them? what is the manufactured date? and what do you want for them?

Hey Ron what are you using for rims, stock or aftermarket?

Don't know if you have already, but check out Tire Rack (http://www.tirerack.com) to see how your choices are rated. The prices vary from theirs once you leave Tire Rack and start shopping locally though. There are marked differences in same tire pricing between shops as well.

I have had a set of BFG KDWS on the TA and loved them. I am currently running on a new set of Khumo Ecsta ASX's 275/40-17 ($735 out the door)and so far so good. They have a built up lip near the bead to help deter curb rash (it also sacrifices itself if you unintentionally clip a curb downtown. :p The rim was perfect but the sidewall was cut in that fat part. Thank goodness for road hazard warranties.)

Good luck in your selection. I'm just glad my search is finished. ;)

i have BFGoodrich G-Sports on mine 97SS , they have great wet and dry traction , very quiet , hook pretty desent and seem to be wearing pretty well (still have half tread with 10K HARD miles on them , drag racing and autocrossing) $150ea.

that's the truth, it wasn't as bad a autocrossing @ Jaycee though. that pavement was really rough on my tires.

I just wanted to thank you all out there for your inputs..... I've added a couple of new contenders into the mix (Falken, Fusion, Riken). All this is getting way to complicated but then again I'm an engineer and we love getting into the details. I'll probably wind up going to the shop that did such a great job in getting tires for my 442 last year.....went way out of their way to get me "fresh" tires and then handle my special rims the way I would. Anyway... thanks all!

An engineer, huh? :D

My husband was a former crane tech and he cringes at the statement "The engineer said.....". :p

(The other one is "all you gotta do is...")

Gotta love the "Engineer's Flow Chart":

That flow chart looks similar to one I used at work! Fair amount of truth in that. As for this "project" of selecting tires I started out with a tire that looked interesting and that I had heard about from a friend and after my exhausting internet search and visiting three seperate tire shops and contacting two manufacturers by e-mail and phone... I'm back to my original pick (which my wife knew from the get-go was the one I would buy)..... but that's what engineers do!
