r12 to 134a conversion

i have been trying to find a shop that would charge my r12 system to no avail . so reluctantly i had it converted to 134a. the ac does not cool ant better than when the r 12 was low . has anyone converted a system and what were the out come. any help would be greatly appreciated

134 does not seem to have the quick cool down as the 12 systems had several years ago. When I bought my first car with a factory 134 fill I thought this ain't gonna work but it would finally bring the temp down after running a while. This was in 94 but the new cars seem to cool much better than the earlier units. I did a conversion in a older Cadillac a few months ago that did cool well at all, a tech at one of our local dealerships blamed it on a weak compressor. The discharge temp would only get down to about 63 to 65 degrees, not good in a dark car. It was still marginal when I sold it a few months ago, never did get it right but sure didn't want to replace the compressor on this car.

r-134 is not as efficient as r-12, converting a marginal r-12 system over will not produce very good results. That's one reason many shops shy away from conversions. The newer r-134 compressors have to work a little harder and pump higher pressures than the old ones to provide the same cooling effect.

i talked to a ac man today and he said that i need a varible vane orfice tube and a dual flow condenser. have never heared of either of these. i googled them and the orfice tube is aval.at napa for around 30.00$$. but the condenser is quite expenseive.also he said that i have to change my evaportor something about the desecent not working with 134a. at this point i guess i am going to pump down the system again and start over i will do it my self this time as i am not sure what the shop did.

i agree that 12 is far better than 134a, if you can get some freeze 12 that stuff works good, also 134a will leak in places that 12 wouldnt just a few thoughts. 12 is not as hard to come by as people think, just need a license or a freind :D
