Seeing that it was burning oil, leaking oil, and smoking at start up it was time. The machine work will probably be done at the end of the week and it will be re-assembled and ready to go back in. I had the transmission resealed with new mod valve, vent tube and dipstick tube gasket as well as a filter and gasket. They told me that someone had to have been in there before. You could'nt tell it from the way it looked when it came out.

The motor was wore out. In the words of the guy building it, he said "The motor was wore out. I've never seen one wear out like this. All the teeth on the cam sprocket are almost gone. If you had to slam on the brakes the chain probably would have come off. I've never been able to remove a timing chain without removing the entire assembly." The block will go as planned. 30 over, the crank will get a grind and polish treatment, and the heads will be reworked with new valves, guides, and springs. We have yet to pick a cam. It will be of a very mild variety. The heads will be shaved I believe he said 4 mils. Just enough to ensure they are flat. He is going to use moly rings with flat top pistons. I also gave him a edlebrock performer intake to use with the stock carb and I have a set of headman headers to put on the car. All the egr stuff will be gone. As much as I can get rid of anyway. I'm currently working on cleaning the engine bay. It is not as bad as I thought. I'm going to take it out this weekend and start pressure washing then I can install new motor mounts and start painting. Now if I can get some warm weather i'll be set. I hate working in the cold. Here are some pictures, the only thing not stock on the motor was the power steering pump.

I'll add more as I go along. Should start seeing more progress in the next week when I start on the engine compartment and when the engine comes back. This has been a project for a beginner like me. Hope you enjoyed it.

When it's all back together and you drive down the street, I predict a huge Cheshire Cat grin from all of the new power... :D

I don't see how that engine was still running with a timing set that worn, does not look like the block has much of a ridge at the top of the bores so not a bunch of wear there. Very clean for an engine that old for sure. Were the manifold bolts broken off? You should be pleased with the results after the re-build, when power leaves that way you just don't notice it very much. Good luck with the project.
