And tackle these leaky valve stem seals. I know where the problem is. On the drivers side rear. The #8 plug has oil deposits on it just like the last ones. It runs so well for a while untill the plug gets oil soaked. I have read a article on replacement and I need to get a spring compressor and a fitting to go into the spark plug hole.
Any words of wisdom on this? Anyone want to come over for moral support? Other than replacing the valve cover gasket and spark plugs on that side what else do I need? I guess I will have to adjust the valves when i'm done, what do you do about that? I'm hoping not to mess it up, Daytona is only 3 weeks away. My luck is i'll screw it up and not be able to take it and i'll be out the entry fee and the trailer deposit. I'm serious about the moral support, i'll pay, buy lunch let me know.

I used the KD Tools 'KD 3271' , it has a turn handle that will wear you out , but the handle pulls off and you can use a 5/8 inch socket. Don't know what engine you are working on but it worked great on all cyls including #7 and #8 on my LT1 which is quite an accomplishment. On the LT1 and most SBC engines the piston is up high enough at TDC to prevent the valves from dropping more than 1/2 inch or so, therefore I bypassed the compressed air or rope tricks and used the 12,3,6,9 o'clock method to put each cyl at TDC and removed the springs and keepers that way. Verify this with your engine specs before trying it or you'll be pulling the head off. Yes you will have to adjust the valves afterward, again I have hydraulics and used the static cly 1 at TDC and Cyl 6 at TDC to adjust lash. This is generally the cleanest and easiest way for hydraulic valves, to me the results are equal to the messy engine running procedure.
Don't know your mods, or mileage on the engine but this could be a good time to replace the springs and maybe add some RR's. aka: taking a $35.00 job and turning it into $400.00 one LOL...
PS if you want to borrow my KD 3271 PM me and I can send it to ya.. Bob D.

Actually, after talking to a couple of people I am going to swap out some security camera work for labor. I'm going to buy new cam and lifters, water pump, timing chain, and have the heads redone. Nothing over the top. I just want it to stop smoking on start up. I was told the valve guides are going to be the problem so the heads have to come off anyway. The snowball effect has already begun.

Barter and trade will be the new cash in my opinion.. Not a bad thing to know how to do anyways.. Have a co worker that's turned several cars/trucks and made enough profit to upgrade everytime and now has a nice Pickup that started as an old toyota pickup with rust and is now traded up to a nice Dodge fullsize.. It's all in how you go about it.. you may give a little more sometimes and less others.. but as long as both parties are happy.. that's all that really counts.. :) Glad you could get something worked out buddy...
