sometime between now and xmas i plan on getting my car painted (it needs it bad). im not looking to spend a fortune on it but at the same time, i dont want an el cheapo maaco paint job. what do i need to look for in a paint/body shop? kinda paranoid that it will look good now but fade or something in few months. i hardly ever drive it because of the clear coat peeling off top and hood. i have considered selling it but if i can go ahead and paint it i know i will start fixing it up more and more. i really dont want to sell it but i cant stand for it to just sit in driveway and everybody always asks me if it runs lol. not gonna change the color, so maybe it wont break me too bad. any advice about what to look for, what to ask etc etc will be appreciated.

Tbone, most of the cost in a paint job is labor, the more you could do prior to dropping the car off will certainly save you quite a bit of money. Trim removal, washing and cleaning the car all over top to bottom to remove as much dirt and dust as is possible. Any sanding and body work you can do, all this will help. Whenever I have work like this done I visit the shop and just look around a bit, are the paint guns and booth clean? Ride by and look at the kind of vehicles being worked on and try to see them in stages of prep before paint. As far as shops go I have been stung a couple of times no matter how careful I was, most of the time the service has exceeded expectations.

be looking for somebody that can shake the can and push the button at the same time...or
stop by at a couple shops and see what they produce , looking for runs and overspray. someone you can talk too and feel comfortable with, someone that takes pride in what they do , MONEY is at the bottom of the list to look at without just giving an open checkbook too. You will find a thousand things on these forums that people will do or say they would do but they won't be writing the check or dealing with the results,, you will. GOODLUCK TBONE,,,,,,,my son..

After it was all said and done I paid $800 for my paint job. It is a single stage non metallic paint job with two coats of clear on top of it. They were supposed to feather out the scratches but did'nt. It was supposed to cost $1100 and they deducted for the mistake. It looks fine to me. It has a gloss shine and a two year warranty. All of us here actually take care of our cars and this paint job should last a long while. My car sits in a garage as well so that should extend the life of it. If you want the best you will pay for it. If you want to go budget then go to the budget shops and look at thier work out in the lot. That is what I did and I think it turned out just the way I wanted.
