i dont drive my camaro very often and i'm not mechanically inclined at all. my oil pressure gauge has always been normal. i drove down to the corner store last nite and noticed that as soon as i started car my oil pressure shot all the way over on the gauge. never did that b4. whats up with that? any way to check to see if its just the gauge? would love to start driving it again but dont want to blow it up.

Not sure which "shot over" you mean... low pressure or high? What year is the car?
Gonna move this to it's own thread so as not to gum up coprunr's clutch thread. :)

oops. sorry about that. i'm pretty new to this stuff. but thanks. anyway--- my car is a 92 and it shot all the way over to the high side. hoping its just gauge or sending unit.

No problem sir. ;)
Not really sure why it would be doing that, most times it's lack of pressure issues. Anyone have any ideas??

Did it stay high or was it just for a second? My 88s oil pressure sending unit went out and it went high and the stuck on low. The pressure can be tested with a pressure gauge by unscrewing the o.p.s.u. by the oil filter and screwing in the gauge. Then cranck the car and the guage will give and accurate reading of the oil pressure.

it stays on the high side. when revving or normal driving the needle moves a little past high. been waiting on a mechanic buddy to get back from out of town to help me look at it. I AM NOT VERY MECHANICALLY INCLINED AND AM SCARED TO MESS ANYTHING UP. he said he has a pressure guage so i will try that. been wanting to put different guages in it too.

Installilng your own gauges is easy. Just take your time and read the instructions. If I can do it anyone can do it. Use mechanical ones if you can. I've done it on three cars so far. The last one I bought the digital ones from summit. It was a breeze but it wasent as accurate. It did'nt miss by much but just that little bit can be disastours. You have tons of help here. Just ask.

I had to put Autometers in mine cause the only ones that were accurate were the rpm and mph! It sounds like the o.p.s.u. to me though.

I wouldn't put a whole lot of confidence in the stock guages. They aren't meant to be precise. Sounds like a sending unit or wiring issue.

Im welling to bet its the opsu! Im sure of it! The car will be fine but you do need to get the sending unit replaced. It might not be right on the money but something is better than nothing!

:confused:i dont sleep all day. sometimes i watch a dvd or read the paper.LOL anyway, back to my problem, i'm hearing i'm gonna need a special wrench or socket to get sending unit off. is this true? what kind/size wrench/socket?

you can usually get on the bottom of the sending unit with a 1/2" or 9/16" wrench. most of the big bell sytle GM units have the hex made on them right above where the treads are . you may have to have two elbows and wrist on that arm to get the wrench on it , but it's there. and i agree with most everyone else on this matter , put a sending unit in it and rock on.

:confused:ok, FINALLY got around to putting new oil pressure sending unit in. my new question is this----what is a normal pressure for a completely stock 305 at an idle? before installation of new sending unit, it pretty much stayed on 60. now, with new one its just barely below 60 but when revved it goes to 60. NORMAL? (i sure hope so)

Tbone, depending on the mileage of your car I'd say thats about right. The best way to test is w/a mech guage to be sure. But given the fact that its a 92 I'd say your ok.
