Well, I dove in and flushed out the radiator. After driving to Tara Blvd over the weekend and it hitting 220 again I thought it was time. Each time it would cool down but this time it did'nt drop down much. On the way home it was a little cooler out so the car ran a little cooler.
I ran all the fluid out and it did'nt look bad. I put in the flush removed the thermostat housing and SURPRISE.......................no thermostat. This was troubling but kind of answered my question why it took so long to warm up. I installed a new 180 t-stat and ran the car. What came out was the look of dark chocolate syrup. And then it turned to a yohoo color. I flushed out about 15 gallons of that stuff letting the car run with the hose trickling into the radiator. What finally came out was somewhat clear. It was not real thick just a lot of it.
The car ran for about 30 min total and did not break the 160 mark. I think it is the 160 mark, the dash between 100 and 220. I drove it up the road hard with the heater off and the needle did'nt move off that same mark. The heater is nice and hot now. But I never tested it before.
So, in conclusion do you guys think I should have it professionally done? What is the downfall of not having a thermostat? It hasent leaked so I guess it was holding all that rusty water. The puke tank was another story, it was so full of muck at the bottom I had to remove it and flush it out with a nozzle a few times to get it all out. It is stained pretty bad though. I will get a new one when it is time to detail under the hood. When I popped off the cap and looked in the tank the fluid was green. I guess the flush stuff worked. I got a new radiator cap, 180 t-stat and new coolant, so hopefully it will be fine for the trip up to Canton. I found the rubbing noise. It was the rear exhaust hangers. They are in nasty shape. I put some grease on them and now they are quite.
