My car is like a person. Good days and bad days. I had some time to kill today so I rolled it out into the driveway and fired it up. Again, with out a hitch, it fire up without hitting the gas. I did do the two turn adjustment that kenny had mentioned but the idle was still up around 2200 rpm. So I adjusted, and adjusted, and adjusted. Finally got it down. After it ran for a while I played with the idle adjustment and got it down to 6-700 rpm. I was feeling good and lovin life. Well, I dropped the car in drive and took it down the street. It stumbles now on acceleration and when I came to a stop it died. Real low idle gets around 400 and dies out. I adjusted the idle back up and it does good in park but when I put it back in drive it wants to die. It also sounds like I may have a lifter tick. It is coming from what sounds like the front of the motor be it also sounds like the passenger side. Maybe it is a manifold gasket. The rest of the exhaust sounds like crap cause of the holes in the muffler and in the cat pipe. I tried using that carb adjustment tool. I turned the screws separately of course and set it till the car started to stumble and then backed it out. I did that on both sides but I cant tell if I made a difference. I checked the vacuum at the brake booster and it was sitting at 16. I rev'ed the car and it jumped to 20 then it went back to 18 and paused and then dropped back to 16 consistantly and held with no fluxuation.
How long does the car have to run (idle) before it reaches temp? I think the gauge is working cause it moved when I drove it down the street but not much. Thats progress from before. The car ran a total of 10 minutes and only moved a little off 100. So for now it is back in the garage, untill I get a better understanding of playing with that carb. The carb adjustment tool is a PITA to get onto those screws, and the choke adjustment took like 3 turns to get it down and that was to just under 1500 rpm. I guess I wont get it painted as soon as I thought. I got to get it tuned right. And Greg, those front brakes are going to have to be bled. On the rears, I tried the back up thing and on the first try I heard what sounded like a spring popping. After that I did not hear it. I tried it about 4 times. Then again, it may have been the seat springs I heard. Kenny, you have a PM.

Best I know with choke engaged rpm should be about 1100. When put in gear not less than 650. but every car is Different. Mailed diagrams today!!

Are you sure that you don't have a vaccum leak?shiftin

That is one thing I will check but would'nt a vacuum leak show up as a erratic needle when I hooked up the vacuum gauge? When whoever replaced the fuel pump they did not put the timing pointer back on. I can probably buy one aftermarket but I would like a original. Without that I cannot set the timing. I need to replace the fuel pump cause it has the wrong one on it. My car has a 3/8 inlet and a 1/4 return. The pump on it has no return so the line that is hooked up to the tank is just sitting there disconnected facing the ground. I can get one from o'reillys for $26 so i'm not sweating that, and it is easy to get to. A guy over at nasty also said that a tick in that location may be the pump anyway seeing that he had the same issue, my fingers are crossed it is that easy. I may, since I will have to pull the hard line from the pump to the carb, is cut the line and add a clear inline filter. I did not want to do that but what the hey. As frustrated as I am with it right now it is taking all the restraint I have not to put it in the swap meet section here and at nasty.

Let me know if you need a hand with anything. I'm no ace mechanic, but 2 minds are always better than one. Sounds like the carb just needs some tweaking. As far as the ticking, could just need the valves adjusted if it hasn't been done in a while.
If you have never pulled the dist. or messed with the timing it should be pretty close to where it needs to be. If not, once you get the carb where it will idle you can time it by ear close enough to drive without hurting anything.

Did you set the idle mix while in gear? It souds to me that's what you missed doing. While it's running, get some barryman's carb cleaner and spray around all vac hoses. when you cross a leak the engine will rev a little.
Also, the idle speed in gear should be 650-700rpm.

I guess I need to get someone to sit in the car in gear while I set it. I may have time to give it another shot today. I cant imagine a vacuum leak thought, most the hoses are new unless it is a intake manifold or another part.
Hey Steve, I lost your number shot me a PM. I may give you a call.

Thats cool. Hey, do you guys think the reason my car stinks like raw gas in the garage after it runs cause it is also venting thru that return line that is not hooked up? Can that cause a issue other than being a open vent?

Don't cut yor hard line from pump to carb. Put the filter under the car where the rear and front gas line meet below the pass.door. Use a metal filter w/ 3/8 inlet and outlet.shiftin

I will note that. I got it out today and messed with it some more. I let it run and after about 5 minutes it started smoking real bad. Black smoke coming out of the drivers side. It did that for a couple minutes and stopped. I adjusted the mixture screws and the idle thing got better. It doesnt stumble taking off anymore but could be smoother. For only having 175hp it sure does have some torque. It spun the rear tire easily giving it half throttle. I guess more fine tuning and that should do it. The temp gauge does not work. The wire is good, the sender is good and you would think one of the two gauges I had was good. I guess I will get a aftermarket one. And trick places to hide one? I will probably just stuff it in the console opening and use spade connectors to remove it when I want to. That would require a electric gauge.

I have to be in Lawrenceville Friday afternoon or I would take off Friday. It is coming along pretty good I guess. I was real down on it for a minute. I'm just going to get it tuned so it runs real smooth and the idle does what it is supposed to do. Then I need to work on bleeding and adjusting the brakes, that passenger side still has a squeal to it, and then work on smoothing out the spots on the body and send it off to be painted. Trying to stay focused.

Carb adj'ing is a long process.
