.... I had to install 2 electric fans to keep mine happy in the heat. The idle changes about 150rpm when I hit the switch, but that's a price of trying to street too much motor...
Electric cooling fans pull a lot of horsepower but do a great job cooling even the nastiest beast of an engine.
If you mount a switch that opens the exciter wire to the alternator only at WOT, it turns it into an idler pulley. Since the engine is only at WOT for 30 seconds tops, the fans will happily run off of the battery.
It's like cop cars and a few other GM cars that interrupt the A/C compressor at WOT to keep from damaging the compressor (and free up hp) at high RPM.
If you want to go longer than a couple of minutes at WOT, you just let it up 1/8" and the alternator is back online.
It only cost $5.

EDIT: This may not work on all alternators without having a 470 ohm resistor to ground on the alternator side.
